To reach Kaikoura, the town on the East coast, where we will be whale watching, one travels through Nelson and Marlborough, known for the very good wines, a wonderful scenery, one we know well of course...
But it’s also a part of the country where still a lot of trees are chopped for the wood industry. (the first 80 years of european settlement there has been an uncontrolled removal of trees among other things to make make place for land for sheep and cattle).
The effect is that the landscape is transformed in a huge patchwork of different shades of green and brown. Green because of the different ages of the trees (because new trees are planted) and brown because of the “craters” left after the trees have been removed. A very impressive landscape.
We also drive through tropical woods and beautiful hidden lakes. Along the shore, shortly before Kaikoura we suddenly see, first a few, and then when we look more closely, a large amount of seals, with a lot of babies. Can’t get away from them!
In Kaikoura we find a camping site near the town and there are terraces and restaurants in town!! So we decide to stroll into town and, as we had a simple meal yesterday, we chose for the Kaikoura specialty, cray fish. Delicous!
The weather is quite nice and we hope it will stay the same tomorrow when we board the boat for the whale watching. The company is right behind the camping site but normally we would have to drive around for 10 minutes to get there. Fortunately the owner of the campingsite made a hole in the fence so that we can secretly reach the company within two minutes!
